The Eyes Have It
The skin on your eyelids is the thinnest skin on the entire body, which means they are one of the first places to show noticeable and often troubling signs of aging.
When the eyelid skin begins to sag and tissue droops around the eyes, you may see more wrinkles and hollow areas that only become more prominent over time. Loss of elasticity in the upper eyelid can even cause loss of your visual field of sight. If you have any of these issues, Dr. Chip Cole may recommend blepharoplasty, more commonly known as an eyelid lift. An eyelid lift removes excess skin above and below the eyes so you can appear more refreshed. The professionals at Oculus Plastic Surgery are proud to have performed countless successful procedures so patients can look younger and see better. Call our Atlanta, GA, office to schedule an eyelid lift consultation and see how you can benefit from treatment.
Youthful and Energized Look
Blepharoplasty is a type of surgery that changes the way the eyelids look. It is done to tighten tissues and get rid of extra skin or fat in the upper eyelids or lower eyelids. This is also known as an eyelid lift.
Most of the time, this surgery is done for cosmetic reasons. However, it's also an excellent way to help people see better if their upper eyelids are drooping and getting in the way. Dark circles under the eyes, crow's feet, and other lines on the face won't go away with an eyelid lift. Those issues are better addressed with other procedures, like laser resurfacing, a cheek lift, or a forehead lift.
See all life has to offer
Blepharoplasty can be performed on healthy patients with excess skin folds around the upper or lower eyelids. This excess or loose skin causes cosmetic problems and may even obstruct your field of vision.
Our procedure at Oculus Plastic Surgery can also address under-eye bags and puffiness that prevent men and women from feeling confident and enjoying life to the fullest. To find out if you are indeed an ideal candidate for eyelid surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Cole or a member of our team.

Smooth your upper or lower lids
During a blepharoplasty Atlanta plastic surgeon, Dr. Cole will make a hidden incision in the natural crease of the eyelid. Once the tissue is removed, we also address any excess fat at the same time. Sutures are used to gently close the incision. Typically, Dr. Cole does an InsideOut™ approach so there is absolutely no scar visible.
A lower eyelid lift requires an internal incision in the lower eyelid to remove or reposition the tissue. This is also known as a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. If, however, there is significant excess skin in addition to puffiness on the lower eyelid, a traditional incision just below the eyelashes (external blepharoplasty) can allow for the removal of excess skin. Our clinic in Atlanta works hard to make sure patients feel comfortable during the process and experience as little scarring as possible.
Long-Lasting Results
After a cosmetic eyelid blepharoplasty, you can expect your eyes to look brighter, tighter, and more open. The effects can be small but noticeable. You will look like yourself but appear more awake, rested, and youthful.
A New Vision of Beauty
In the recovery room, Atlanta blepharoplasty provider, Dr. Cole will put ointment in your eyes to keep them moist and place cold compresses over them. Right after surgery, the ointment may make your eyes sensitive to light and make it hard to see clearly.
You may feel like your eyes are dry or wet. The first night after surgery, putting cool compresses on your eyes and sleeping with your head raised will help with swelling. Atlanta eyelid lift provider, Dr. Cole will tell you how to take care of yourself in great detail.
Blepharoplasty recovery is fairly short, usually about four to seven days, and there are things that we will review that you can do that will help keep that to a minimum.
The Blepharoplasty recovery and your presentation after blepharoplasty, usually after about two weeks, you can go to places, do things, and people don't even know that you've had surgery. One advantage of the eyelid region is, if you wear glasses, you can put a light tint on your glasses and give you a little assistance in hiding it while you're recovering. And also, if you're doing something outdoors, you can wear a hat and some sunglasses. But if you're gonna entertain, if you're gonna go to dinner, you're gonna look people eye to eye, I would allow two weeks minimum. Three weeks would be ideal, just in case you have a little more bruising or swelling than the average person.
When you have blepharoplasty surgery, you don't want to get overheated, overexerted, because when you do that, you increase your metabolism, you increase your blood pressure, you can cause some bleeding, and you cause more swelling. If you have bleeding underneath the tissues, I like to say blood is like whipped cream for bacteria. They love it. And you're a lot more susceptible to getting infection if you have a hematoma or you have bleeding. So let's do everything we can to prevent any bleeding, which is basically overexertion. That's why I like to say, don't pick up anything more than a bag of groceries.
Blepharoplasty recovery is absolutely painless as long as you keep the front part of the eye moist with ointment. When you have blepharoplasty surgery, it's similar to having a sprained ankle. Everything works. It's a little swollen. It's a little sore. The difference is when you close your eyes and you relax like sleeping, your eyelids might open up a little bit those first few days. We don't want the front surface of the eye called the cornea to get dry. So as long as you use ointment, keep your eyes lubricated, it is a painless procedure.
Blepharoplasty recovery is pretty straightforward and it's pretty minimal, usually about four to seven days. As long as you follow the medications and the instructions that we give you, you'll do absolutely fine. The only people that have a little more trouble are people that will overexert or they take aspirin and products like that that cause more bruising and swelling.
Blepharoplasty is a specific type of eyelid surgery, very similar to Kleenex is a specific type of facial tissue. Eyelid surgery comes in many forms, but the cosmetic version is blepharoplasty, where we remove a little skin and muscle to take some bulk to make the eyelid look more rested.
Blepharoplasty surgery is extremely safe in people that have done blepharoplasty many times. There are a lot of small vessels around the eye that need to be avoided, but anyone trained in doing blepharoplasty surgery knows how to do it very safely.
Blepharoplasty surgery is minimal to zero discomfort. We use topical anesthesia and we use small injections right under the skin that numb that area. There's several little sensory nerves and anyone experienced in blepharoplasty surgery knows which nerves to block so that it's essentially a painless procedure.
Blepharoplasty recovery is fairly minimal on the order of four to seven days. If someone has external lower lid blepharoplasty, it could take more like a week to two weeks because it has a tendency to bruise and swell more. So if you use a laser, then you're going to have less swelling, less bruising. If you use a scalpel, you're going to have a similar result down the road, but it is going to take an extra few days to heal because you'll have more bruising and swelling.
Blepharoplasty results are permanent if you stabilize the eyebrow. If you don't stabilize the eyebrow while you're doing a blepharoplasty, it usually lasts five to seven years. Think of it like a curtain rod and a curtain. Eventually that curtain rod will start to droop or the hammock will start to droop. As long as the support tissue, which is the brow, is secure, you never have to do another blepharoplasty.
